This was on my mind today. It’s something I come back to, because when someone close to you demands respect and you tell them that respect is supposed to be earned that it’s something we’re not entitled to have just because we demand it.
That just because someone is older than we are, doesn’t mean they automatically deserve to have our respect. Respect depends on the relationship and what the other person brings to the relationship. It also depends on the circumstances and whether that person deserves to have our respect.
Respect should be a two-way street. It’s a privilege we take for granted thinking we’ll always have it, with us expecting others to fall into line, for them to hand out their respect. We must be respectful back.
