Expectations & Milestones

“It’s when ordinary people rise above the expectations and seize the opportunity that milestones truly are reached.” – Mike Huckabee

Milestones are those markers in the road telling us how far we’ve come and how much we’ve managed to achieve. Given my own physical, mental and emotional disabilities, I would always struggle to reach my own milestones. Milestones shouldn’t be about whether we reach them early, or even on time.

They should be about the little things we accomplish that either we were never expected to accomplish. The little things we take for granted that we don’t see as milestones, it’s the little things that make a big difference. The CP Diary is that milestone.

As Mike Huckabee’s quote says, it’s when ordinary people rise above their own expectations who seize the opportunity. I believe it is in those times that our milestones are truly reached.

  1. While I understand the quote I don’t wholly agree. Milestones are entirely subjective and personal.

I agree with you that they should never be imposed on another through expectation, but always applauded for however small they may be; as small to one person way well be huge to another. We are individual and who are we to judge an others achievements?

Unrealistic expectation is one of the many issues that parents should try to avoid inflicting on their children. This can have a strong effect on a child’s motivation and self- esteem, while healthy and realistic expectations can encourage success.

    1. I believe you’ve answered your own thoughts when you say, ‘Milestones are entirely subjective and personal.’ Some of your explanations concur with that of the author.

Milestones shouldn’t be expected, but should be subjective and personal, since our approach to how we tackle those milestones will always be tackled differently and at different times.

  2. A milestone to me is when we reach something that we weren’t supposed to reach; like when I was diagnosed at age 8 with Diabetes, I wasn’t expected to live much past 18 years of age. I have surpassed that and so far have beaten the odds in several ways.

Milestones are personal and subjective I agree.

    1. Thanks Lisa. I agree with both you and Brad. Yes milestones are personal and subjective, but maybe our perceptions on milestones must also be subjective; instead of thinking of them in terms of age.
