  1. Understanding our past is vital to moving ahead. Honest self-reflection can lead to a better understanding of who we are and what we need to do to learn from our past, particularly our failures and setbacks.

We must make those past experiences mean something moving forward.

    1. Thanks. Yes, and I agree. I believe it is the only way to understand our past and understand us also.

It is also important for others to understand us so they mentally move on and see us for how we are, not how we used to be. That will take out judgments.

There’s nothing worse than knowing you’ve changed, for others to treat you how they used to. If they don’t change that’s on them.

  2. I know for me I have been a prisoner of my past for far too long. I have wasted far too much of my life feeling trapped and paralysed by it, when I could have been doing things differently.

I have often wondered what it would be like to have a normal life without being buried under that mountain of guilt, shame and remorse that my parents piled onto me.

I was thinking about feeling the aches and pains of my age in the shower, which serves to remind me that life is very short.

I would like to know that when I leave this world I have at least done something to make it a better place for future generations to come.

    1. Thanks Randy. Yes, small steps, but significant ones. You’re slowly changing certain aspects of your life and you will eventually reap the rewards.

I believe that no matter where we start we can begin to make a difference not only for ourselves, but for others too.

As you say life is short. It’s important to let go of the guilt, shame and remorse. They know what they’ve done and it’s not your guilt to carry.

  3. Our past has moulded us into the people we are currently. But just because you had some negative things happen in life doesn’t mean you should dwell on them.

Reflection and working through issues that haunt us is one of the ways to get past them. Life is about learning and growing (hopefully). We learn from our past, but things that get us stuck should be worked on.

There are a lot of people who dwell on negative things from their past. Sometimes we need to put them aside and continue on with our lives or we tend to be bitter rehashing old wounds.

    1. Thanks Maria. Yes, I agree with you on all your points. It’s important we learn not to dwell on past issues. If we dwell for too long, in some cases, it can be the difference between life and illness.

Negative emotions are known to create disease if we dwell for too long. I have seen that happen and it doesn’t sit pretty. I agree with you that reflection is a good way to get past them.
