Leaving things unsaid

Something inspirational:

“Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult still, is to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment. ”

  1. Yes, not to throw in a snide or sarcastic remark can be difficult. I grew up in a world where people didn’t think it was a big deal to hurt your feelings and would think it hilarious to have a laugh at your expense.

Nowadays it’s at the opposite end of the spectrum where people worry about hurting other people’s feelings, to the point of obsessing about doing or saying the wrong thing.

I was well trained in the art of character assassination by my mother so there are many times when I have to really bite my tongue to avoid saying something highly inappropriate in the moment.

It’s definitely a fine line to walk at times but as long as I try to think before I speak, I usually do okay.

    1. Thanks Randy. It’s all about being politically correct and making sure we continue to be politically correct. It needs to happen.

I don’t think it’s a bad thing. I think if more of us were aware of how we speak, relationships would thrive, society would work together more and the world would be better for it.

People’s behaviour would also change. People are too scared to say anything for fear of reprisal, but sometimes things have to be said.

It’s important we speak our truth, no matter how difficult that is.

  2. I have learned not to jump in with my size nines anymore but to listen to myself before I speak.

It’s amazing what a difference keeping your mouth shut makes. It certainly makes life easier when you don’t have to keep apologising for having a big mouth.

    1. Thanks. Yes, sadly not everyone will apologise for having a big mouth. Those who have a big mouth generally tend to disagree.

But it’s important for everyone to think about what they say before they say it, primarily because what we say cannot easily be retracted.

We must want to care about ourselves, about each other. Relationships would thrive and the world would be sweeter.
