Loving somebody I wasn’t

Something inspirational:

“I’ve never fooled anyone. I’ve let people fool themselves. They didn’t bother to find out who and what I was. Instead they would invent a character for me. I wouldn’t argue with them. They were obviously loving somebody I wasn’t.”

  1. I like this quote. Marilyn was portrayed as the dumb blonde, but she was anything but and some of her movies showed her great acting ability.

She played out the role people wanted her to play and lots of us fall into that trap too.

    1. What you describe most people deal with. People put their own spin on others, and yet they ignore everything that is wrong about themselves.

Marilyn Monroe was a beautiful girl, coupled with a beautiful but troubled soul. This is why she struggled and others took advantage. Marilyn Monroe did have a great acting ability with childlike qualities.

Time may have moved on, but people’s behaviour hasn’t. Lessons are not being learned and the same behaviour is being played out.

  2. Boy, I have wasted most of my life pretending to be whatever people wanted me to be, to the point where I don’t have a clue as to who I am.

It’s difficult to figure it out when you’re 50 years old, but I guess better late than never, applies here. My mother brainwashed me into behaving in a certain way by spoiling me, and my dad seemed to despise me for it.

You can only tolerate the alternating patterns of passive-aggressive abuse and neglect for so long before you realize it’s easier just to give in and do their bidding.

I can definitely relate to Marilyn Monroe since people only saw her the way they wanted to see her instead of getting to know who she really was.

    1. Thanks Randy. Yes, as you say, better late than never. I would go with that too. I can resonate with your response.

I think it sad where people see how other people are being treated and yet they change nothing in their own lives and the abuse you talk about continues.

It’s good that you’re aware and can change certain aspects of your life. There is no reason for you to do other people’s bidding.

  3. On the surface I may seem like a certain character to someone, but that’s a blurry picture of me, if not completely untrue.

Perhaps some folks need to judge to prove their superiority. I’ve been thinking about this quote all day.

    1. You know something Tim. People will choose to judge, regardless of how you or any one else presents. They will see what they want to see because it’s convenient to them.

There are many reasons why ‘folk’ judge. Some will outwardly feel superior, but inwardly they will know. You will see that they’re not superior at all.

Although I feel irritated this was Marilyn’s life, I was drawn to her words and her honesty. To think this was her life, really saddens me. And given my experiences around a disability I didn’t know I had, I can relate.
