A healthier lifestyle

For us to continue to maintain a healthier lifestyle, we need to make conscious mindful decisions. Not to means we will continue to rely on unconscious already formed habits.

Unfortunately, the things we need to look out for are generally the things we tend to ignore. For example, we become dependent on smoking and alcohol, which can affect our health. We need to think about those and quit smoking, and drink alcohol in moderation, ideally spreading units out throughout the week and avoid binge drinking.

Emotions will play their part and dictate how we will cope with life, so it’s important those aren’t ignored. Emotions not dealt with account for a large percentage of stress. It is estimated that 1 in 4 people in the UK experience mental health issues each year. Managing our emotions is an integral part of managing everyday stress.

Immunity must also be included as part of a positive healthy lifestyle choice initiative. The more stress we carry, the more our immune system is affected. We must also include exercise as part of our lifestyle. Although it’s important to exercise, it’s important we moderate that also. It’s all about balance and moderation.

It’s also important we drink plenty of fluids and watch our caffeine and sugar intake. We must also maintain a healthy and varied diet from a wide variety of foods, cut back on foods high in saturated fat, salt and sugar, eat smaller portions and consume only small amounts of dairy.

Keeping up energy levels is important as is balancing blood sugar levels. Without snacking, energy levels can dip, but we need to make sure our snacks are healthy. Sleeping also has a big impact on our immunity which we seem to get very little of, but we must try to aim for between 6 to 8 hours per night.

A lack of sleep not only affects our mood and causes irritability when we begin to fail to cope, but it’s also an integral part of our psychological wellbeing, which adds to our healthier lifestyle.

  1. I try to follow your example towards a healthier lifestyle, but it’s not as easy as it sounds.

I have good intentions, but don’t always manage to be as good as I should, so while I am cognisant of all the things you suggest; I maybe achieve 75% most of the time. I know I could do better and aim to do that.

    1. Thanks. Yes, I think we can all do better of course, but knowing we could do better is half the battle. The other side of wellness is being ill, so I would always opt to take the easier route of staying well.

Although it may not seem the easier route in the short term, it’s far easier than having to deal with illness when we’re ill.
