Differing opinions

19 Apr 2017

Because we’re all a product of our own individual experiences and upbringings, it’s only natural that our opinions will differ on a whole range of topics and the more our opinions differ, the less accepting we will be on other people’s opinions.

Of course, there is a train of thought that the world would be a dull place if we were all the same, but it is the incredible diversity that can make our world such a fascinating place, but it’s up to us to buy into that diversity and learn to appreciate each other’s opinions through all of our diversities.

We’ve become less tolerant through our inability to communicate with others who hold different opinions. Some of us might feel inferior that our opinions seem worthless on the back of others’ opinions, but that’s a confidence thing. We are all entitled to our opinion, even though we may not agree with the others’ opinions.

We can still maintain our own identity and still have valid views through understanding each other’s opinions and being tolerant of what’s being said. We don’t have to convince the other person of our opinions, in the same way they don’t have to convince us of theirs, but it is important for us to embrace each other’s differences, through our views and opinions. That’s how we relate to and understand each other better.

We must also make sure we treat others with the same degree of respect, as we would want ourselves. Listening to and hearing other people’s opinions will help us learn more about the world and how others’ words and what we’re told can make our life and us better people.

Unfortunately, we’re also too quick to judge instead of understanding the person behind the words. But I believe taking our time to get to know someone has to be far better than prejudging them and why would we want to do that?

We are all entitled to our opinions, but what we are not entitled to do, is insist that anyone else shares those opinions. Understanding that is vital to our relationships.

You’re right and I wish it worked like that, my life would certainly have been different had it worked out as you suggested.

We’d all be different and better with each other, if we accepted others’ opinions.
