We shouldn't be apologetic for writing about Mental Health. My writing is another voice, a voice that speaks out and puts another slant on mental health. It's a voice that champions mental health, but differently to what's already out there.
My Books bring messages of 'hope'
My books bring messages of 'hope.' My first book, Cerebral Palsy: A Story ‘Finding the Calm After the Storm’ is a hugely positive move that helps me to get my message of positivity, inclusiveness, and a voice for non-able bodied to a wider audience. My books champion mental health.
Cerebral Palsy: 'A Story' was a difficult book to write, because it was important it served not only to protect me but to protect those close to me. Disability isn’t about judgment and if it is, it shouldn’t be. Writing about disability is about bringing awareness and change. My books are positive and remain inclusive, which I hope can reach a wider audience. They help with mental health.
My Books bring 'understanding'
Growing up, I didn't know or understand what my physical, emotional and mental difficulties were growing up, but Cerebral Palsy: ‘A Story’ brings understanding in a way that can resonate with the reader. It can also help the reader understand and come to terms with what they get to deal with.
The book is written from a place of 'spiritually' knowing. Without things happening in the way they did, I wouldn't have become an author and writer. Had my parents told me what my disability was, I probably wouldn't have thought to look into what I later learned was a disability, or to understand why I presented differently to my siblings.
Disability breeds hostility
People with a disability come across hostility. It's not something they get used to, but something they continually have to defend. It is important to talk about disability. It is important others understand what we each may go through and to support.
Cerebral Palsy: ‘A Story,’ brings my disability together in a contained place, that couldn't be done in any other way. It also brings acceptance and an awareness for others on what they get to deal with.
My books help find acceptance
My books can help you, the reader, find acceptance on what you may have to deal with and helps others to understand how they can improve on tackling their own issues. Spirituality, Healing and Me, my second book is the healing element to my journey. I wrote my third book, Survival: The Covid Years to help me understand and to navigate the pandemic, for others too.
