The gut is home to trillions of bacteria that help with digestion, absorbing nutrients, and keeping us healthy. Scientists now know that gut bacteria can also affect the lungs – this is called the gut-lung axis.

Gut Health and Breathing

When gut bacteria are out of balance (called dysbiosis), it can lead to lung problems like asthma, COPD, and even lung cancer.

For example:

  • Children with asthma often have fewer helpful bacteria.
  • People with lung cancer may lack certain bacteria that reduce inflammation.

Respiratory infections like flu and Covid-19 can also harm gut health, creating a cycle that weakens both the gut and lungs.

Keeping the Gut Balanced

A healthy gut helps protect the lungs. Good bacteria produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which reduce inflammation and support lung function.

More SCFAs mean:

  • Lower asthma risk in children;
  • Fewer COPD symptoms in adults.

What Helps?

  • Probiotics (good bacteria supplements) restores gut balance and can improve breathing, especially for people who deal with asthma;
  • Fibre-rich foods (like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains) feed good bacteria and boost SCFAs;
  • Exercise also supports a healthy gut;
  • Future treatments may include faecal microbiota transplants or personalised probiotics to improve lung health.

Everything in the body is connected. It is important to remember that by taking care of the gut, you also protect the lungs and your overall well-being. (Source: theconversation.com)
