Many of us, at some point, have lived a lie – whether it's masking our true selves, hiding our emotions, or pretending to be something we're not. It might come from fear of rejection, a desire to fit in, or the pressure to meet expectations imposed by society, family, or even ourselves. These lies can take many forms, from pretending to be happy when we’re not, to pursuing paths we don’t truly want, to suppressing parts of who we are for the sake of peace or acceptance.

Living a lie can make us feel disconnected

Living a lie often leaves us feeling disconnected from our authentic selves. It’s a heavy burden to carry. For many years, I lived a life that wasn’t mine. It was a toxic existence, shaped by things I didn’t choose and weighed down by a reality I didn’t fully understand. I lived with something I didn’t even know I had. The pain, that came from not knowing, from not understanding my own body or experiences, the frustration coloured my entire life. I was living a lie, but it wasn’t one of my own making.

The CP Diary

Then I started The CP Diary and everything started to change. For as long as I can remember, I felt different – out of sync with myself and with the world. There was always a disconnection, like something fundamental about my life was hidden and out of reach. I struggled through experiences, not understanding why things were the way they were. I carried the pain – and with no explanation as to why, I was certain I was going to the grave with it.

The CP Diary is my 'journey'

Starting The CP Diary has been a lifeline. It's my journey – it has given me a way to understand what I have never been able to verbally put into words. It’s been a space where I have been able to piece together the truth of my experiences – an outlet for my thoughts, my feelings, my frustrations and my reflections. Through this process, I’ve finally been able to make sense of the pieces that were missing for so long. I’ve been able to learn about cerebral palsy and autism, without initially having the knowledge or understanding – and knowing that is what that was. It is freeing.

Writing has brought a deep sense of relief

I now have a name for the things I’ve lived with. It hasn’t been easy to face the reality of living so long without that understanding, but it’s brought a deep sense of relief to finally know why life has felt the way it has. The CP Diary has helped me process not just the physical aspects of my condition but the emotional toll of living without knowing – for so many years.

I am now able to live 'authentically'

It’s hard to explain the difference this has made in my life. For the first time, I feel like I’m living authentically, with a deeper awareness of myself and my mind. I no longer feel trapped by the unknown – by the frustration of not understanding what was going on inside my own body, my own mind. I’ve stopped blaming myself for the struggles I had to face, for the things I couldn’t explain or fix. The CP Diary has given me a space to heal, to reflect – for me to come to terms with my truth – and in that process, I’ve started to rebuild my life, mentally and emotionally. I am no longer transfixed on the negative, of the disconnection with myself.

I'm living my truth

There’s a strength in my journey that I’m enormously proud of. It’s not just about accepting my condition; it’s about embracing the fact that I’m finally living my truth. I’m no longer in the dark about who I am or why my life has been the way it is. There’s a peace in that, a sense of closure for the years I spent in pain – feeling lost.

It's been a difficult journey

I won’t say the journey has been easy, but it’s been empowering. There’s a deep sense of validation in knowing that the struggles I faced weren’t my fault, that there was a reason for my pain. And now that I know, I can move forward with a greater understanding, not just of cerebral palsy – but of myself. I can finally live without the weight of the unknown pressing down on me.

Reclaiming a sense of 'me'

Every day, I feel like I’m reclaiming a piece of myself that I had lost to the lie. And that’s something I’m proud of. I’m proud of the growth, proud of the understanding I’ve gained, and proud of the strength it’s taken to confront the truth head-on. I’m still learning, still growing, but I’m doing it with a sense of clarity that I never had before.

Conclusion

The CP Diary has been a guiding light on this path, helping me to correct the misunderstandings I had about myself and allowing me to live a life that feels true to who I am. And for the first time, I can honestly say that I’m proud of the person I am becoming – because now I’m living with understanding, with truth, with a life that is no longer shroud in lies.
