Heart health is so important therefore it’s important we understand what helps keep our heart healthy.

Exercise is an important factor if we are to cut down on problems with the heart. Incorporating exercise into our lives at least 3 times a week is necessary. Certain foods and vitamins have also been shown to be beneficial. Vitamin B not only provides the body with energy but is also good for the heart.

A lack of Vitamin B, particularly B9 and B6 can lead to high levels of homocysteine (an amino acid in the blood), which may damage arteries, leading to heart disease and a stroke. Maintaining the right level of homocysteine in our blood is important.

Blueberries is a good antioxidant superfood that goes well with other fruit. Simply mix it with natural low-fat yoghurt and granola for a perfect snack. Blueberries contain an antioxidant called Anythocyanin, which may help reduce our risk of heart disease. They may also help with the ageing process and in the reduction of certain types of cancer.

Fish is another good way to boost heart health. Oily fish contains Omega-3 fatty acids, which is beneficial in lowering blood cholesterol. It also has a positive effect on the heart and reduces cardiovascular problems associated with heart disease.

Foods high in fibre are good for the heart. Fibre contains psyllium that helps reduce cholesterol, helping prevent heart problems. Foods such as bananas, apples, pasta, broccoli, cabbage and whole-wheat bread are all good foods containing fibre.

There is a connection and consequence to everything we do. Everything we eat should be eaten in moderation, so that we don’t continue to eat foods we know are bad for us. We must be sensible with our choices.

  1. Great information. I know homocysteine is bad for you and can lead to early aging and a lot of other things.

I've been trying also to eat more fibre. It helps to rid the body of toxins amongst other things. I don't get a lot of time to exercise. I do walk the dog occasionally, but with the time change by the time I get home from work it's dark.

I've been wanting to start yoga. I have a ton of videos, so I just have to do it.

    1. Lisa, as long as your trying to do all these things, eventually you may. I know sometimes we have good intentions, but the winter months are particularly difficult. Keep up your hard work.

  2. I was just looking at my multivitamin and minerals and B9 isn't in there, but all the others are. I wonder why? I get some exercise especially being back at work.

I am living the healthiest in my life and will continue to do so, but as I get older it is going to be more and more challenging.

    1. Brian, I am pleased you are living a more healthy lifestyle and hope you will continue to do so.

I understand with the challenges you have right now why it will be harder for you to continue along this path, but I know you will do your best.

  3. Yes, it sounds like a healthy diet is very important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle! I haven't always done the best in that department, but I know I need to pay more attention to it. Now if I can get motivated to do more exercise, I'm sure that would help too!

    1. Randy, we probably all need to pay more attention to it, but half the battle is knowing. I am sure you will give some of it a go.

  4. Thanks for reminding me to take my multivitamin! Yeah, the fish consumption has to increase, although we eat tuna already, (I know it isn't enough). I need to increase the distance I am walking too, thanks for the reminder.
