Following on from my last blog on our metabolism, I thought it would be helpful to provide some more information on how we can boost our metabolism.

Drink water

We all know that drinking lots of water throughout the day is important, but did you know that this also has the effect of increasing your metabolism, as the metabolic process needs water to fuel it?

Eat spicy foods

Spicy foods are renowned for boosting our metabolism. Hot spices like pepper, chilli and curry all help the process. Other spices that you may not think of as hot but also react in our bodies in the same way are cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and nutmeg.

Always eat breakfast

Missing breakfast is one of the worst things we can do for our metabolism. We should always eat a healthy breakfast.  Healthy cereals such as porridge oats, low fat milk, fruit and yoghurts all make a delicious and nutritious start to the day.

Early morning exercise

A short burst of intense exercise, when we first get up on a morning is really excellent for boosting the metabolism. We only have to do about five minutes of intense exercise to gain the benefit all day. Simple, daily exercise such as running on the spot, jumping or running up and down stairs will all help our metabolic rate.

Keep your thyroid healthy

It is really important to try to ensure the thyroid gland is working efficiently. For this to happen, the thyroid needs selenium, zinc, copper, and iodine. Seafood and nuts are a good source of these, or alternatively they can be found in most daily multi-vitamin supplements.

Don’t eat too late

There is an age old saying that we should ‘eat breakfast like a king and eat dinner like a pauper’.  Unfortunately, most of us eat more at dinner than we do at breakfast and this is exactly the opposite of what we should do to speed up our metabolism. You should also finish eating dinner early, at least three hours before bedtime.

  1. Great information. I especially eat breakfast and don't eat a lot for dinner and take my vitamins everyday.

I do have low thyroid and take medication for that so I think that contributes to my weight gain sometimes. I try to get more water in daily.

    1. Thanks Lisa. We often have to work within our restraints on what we deal with.

A bigger breakfast and a smaller dinner is important, particularly as we're less active on an evening. Boosting our metabolism also help with energy levels, but fundamentally we should always be happy with ourselves and our weight.

    1. That's good. This is something we should all be really thinking about. I feel anything to do with our health must be an important consideration.

  2. Yes it's something I definitely need to work on, as I found out today that I have actually gained around 30 pounds since the same time last year!

My doctor has suggested drinking more water and has also put me on a thyroid medicine which seems to help how I've been feeling. My downfall has been lack of exercise and eating at night, which I definitely need to cut out.

It shouldn't take a whole lot to really boost my metabolism, since I didn't have any problems when I was younger. Time to get out and enjoy the summer it looks like!

    1. The winter months are the worst for motivation and lack of exercise. Hopefully now Randy that we're in the summer months, you'll eat less in the evening and will get out more.

I hope the thyroid medicine continues to help you feel better. If you're feeling better, you'll definitely be more motivated to do all of these things.
