How many of us are the embodiment of acceptance when it comes to accepting other people? Perhaps our lack of tolerance comes from unconsciously expecting others to fall into line through our own expectations of them.

I never judge. I know that having cerebral palsy has made me more accepting of other people, because I see other people's struggle through my own.  So how do we go about changing things?

These pointers may help us think about change:

  • Accept others so that you’re not standing in judgment. Others are entitled to their opinions. We can’t expect others to fall into line with us;
  • Our non-acceptance of others is usually as a result of how we see ourselves. The more accepting of ourselves we are, the more accepting we will be of others;
  • We can’t always expect others to agree with our thoughts or opinions. If something is right for us, it may be wrong for someone else. As far as other people are concerned there is no right or wrong;
  • Judging others is often the result of self-criticism. When we stop judging ourselves, we will stop judging others;
  • We must learn to focus on what’s happening in the present moment;
  • A lack of acceptance towards others, comes from us living in the past, or using comparison between others;
  • Wanting things done our way.

We must unconsciously move on and let go if we are going to change the way we do things as far as acceptance of others is concerned.

  1. I really don't think I have a problem accepting others. I accept everyone. I'm genuinely a nice person and am usually nice to others; but I do have a problem with trust.

    1. Yes accepting others and a problem with trust generally speaking are two different things. The problem we have though, that without trust in there is an element of not being able to accept the people we've lost our trust in.

      It's a good point you've raised. Thanks Lisa.

  2. I think being accepting of others is one of the important lessons we are here for and is often the result of conscious decision and self thought.

    Your suggestions are really good and I imagine would help tremendously in that process.
