Covid-19 affects us all. Many thousands of people in the UK who are vulnerable and at high risk from the virus are currently shielding, with the vast majority of those awaiting vaccination.

However, There is information out there to suggest with increasing evidence that the government in the UK has chosen an immunisation strategy that is not supported by evidence. I thought it helpful to share that information here.

Professor Herb Sewell

Professor Herb Sewell, an Emeritus Professor of Immunology at Nottingham University, UK this week, has said there is mounting evidence from Israel, to suggest the Covid-19 vaccine is only 60% effective after the second dose as long as clinicians stick to the required timing between first and second vaccinations.

Instead of the government sticking to the original schedule that requires the Covid-19 mRNA Pfizer vaccine that requires two jabs, three weeks apart, the UK government has instead chosen to vaccinate everyone with the first dose and then wait 12 weeks to administer the second vaccination.

According to Professor Sewell by delaying the second dose ‘we could be making a terrible mistake.’ It is clear the current strategy, to administer the second dose of the vaccine after a 12-week delay, has been shown by data from Israel to be ‘much less effective’ than the UK Government has suggested.

The professor also has concerns that the delay may carry additional danger as a weak immune response, as reported after only one dose of the Pfizer vaccine, could encourage new, vaccine-resistant strains to evolve.

The 'World Health Organisation'

The World Health Organisation, the Centre for Disease Control, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have said that it is important we stick to the schedule as outlined by the vaccine manufacturers, Moderna and Pfizer.

  1. I agree with all of these concerns. It is too early to be conclusive on the efficacy of timing of the 12 week gap in giving the second vaccination, as there is no evidence, but there will be in time.

My view is that the government should have applied the precautionary principle and stuck to the 3-4 week gap as the evidence supports that and as that is how the vaccine manufacturers intended its use.

Instead, it is clear the UK government is putting the economy first, driven by stereotypical right wing politics, rather than sound social policy and only time will tell, the consequences of that course of action.

    1. Thanks. Yes, I agree with you. If you work on the facts what the government have done, will come back to bite. It's just a question of when.

Given the amount of deaths in the UK, it is even more important we stick to the rules and use our own common sense and do what is right for us, to keep us and our loved ones safe. Too many people have already died. We must all do more to think about and to keep ourselves safe.

  2. Yes, it does seem to be illogical with the way they are doing things, concerning the Covid-19 and the vaccine scheduling.

They should be focusing on speeding up the process as much as possible along with increasing the production process. I don't understand their logic, seeing as the longer we wait, the more chances that there will be for the variants to mutate and get stronger. We can only hope that common sense prevails.

    1. Thanks Randy for your common sense and you're right. I hope that the seed you have sown, will make it's way to the UK Government.

What you have said would happen has, new variants have now mutated. It can't bring back the people we've lost, but it can help to save more lives.
