Life with anything you get to deal with physically and mentally becomes a continuous journey of adaptation and resilience. It was particularly difficult, because I had spent my whole life unaware I was even dealing with a disability. When I received my diagnosis at the age of 46, even though I had been diagnosed at the age of 2, it was important for me to learn about myself and for the first time to bring my disability together. I could only do that through writing, through bringing my experiences together.
Finding Myself Through Writing, Awareness, Reflection and Resilience
Learning late that I had cerebral palsy and ten years after getting a diagnosis, learning that I am also autistic, has been both painful and freeing. Those who should have looked after me didn’t, and that absence shaped my journey. It continues to be a lonely journey, not by choice, but by circumstance. Still, through the silence, I’ve found a deeper connection with myself. The path hasn’t been easy, but it’s real, it matters and it’s mine.
My Books
Through Cerebral Palsy: A Story, Spirituality, Healing, and Me, and Survival: The Covid Years – I document my personal experiences, insights, and the lessons I have learned along the way. Each book reflects a different aspect of my life, from living with something, finding out it was a disability to finding strength through spirituality and enduring the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Cerebral Palsy: A Story 'Finding the Calm After the Storm'
For most of my life, I didn’t know I had a disability. I just knew life felt harder, but I couldn’t explain why. This book is my journey of finally finding answers in my forties and learning how to bring those answers together. It’s about recognising cerebral palsy for what it is in my life, so that I can begin to understand myself and see myself differently. This isn’t just my story—it’s also about how we find meaning when things never quite make sense. We all must be instrumental in making things make sense.
Spirituality, Healing, and Me: How Living a Spiritual Life Offers Hope and Healing in the Modern World
Spirituality has always been part of how I see the world. Even when I didn’t have answers, I believed there was something more – something guiding me. This book is about how I’ve leaned on those beliefs to cope, to keep going, and to find peace in myself. Healing isn’t just physical – it’s emotional, mental, and spiritual. This is the side of my journey that has helped me to stay grounded, something I heavily relied on growing up.
Survival: The Covid Years – Time for Change
Living with anxiety has been part of my life, even before I understood why. When the pandemic hit, those feelings grew deeper and stronger. The world became louder, more uncertain, and harder to manage. This book is about how I got through it—the small steps, the coping strategies, and the quiet strength it took to face each day. Survival: The Covid Years isn’t just about the virus – it’s about mental health, resilience, and learning how to survive when life suddenly changes overnight. It eventually helped me to cope, adapt, and reflect in the face of what was a global crisis.
Conclusion
Through my books, it has always been my aim to provide an honest, factual account of my experiences while offering insight and encouragement to others who may be struggling also. My journey has been shaped by too many obstacles. Although growth comes from within, it is in those quiet moments of self-discovery that I found my strength. My hope is that by opening up, others can find understanding, connection, and the reassurance that through their journey, they are not alone.
