You'll probably be familiar with the phrase, “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper.”

This means that to promote good health, we should begin our day with a large healthy breakfast, then continue our day consuming smaller amounts of food with each meal. Not only will it help us lose weight in the long-term and prevent obesity, but it will also balance energy levels throughout the day too.

Research has shown that people who start their day with a bigger breakfast, eat fewer calories as the day progresses, compared to those who consume a smaller breakfast.

Other reasons why we should eat breakfast

  • If we don’t start our day with a healthy breakfast we cannot mentally or physically function well;
  • We obtain energy through food, so it is important we make sure we eat the right foods. We also need to provide the body with the nutrients it needs to keep our immune system functioning at optimum level;
  • Concentration is another reason why we should eat breakfast. Without eating first thing in the morning, we will slowly begin to struggle with concentration. When we concentrate we learn better, when we learn better we become more focused.

Finally, eating breakfast balances blood sugar levels that sorts out hunger, helps avoid mood swings and stops us from becoming irritable.

  1. Some good ideas here.

    I never used to eat breakfast but have now for quite a number of years. It's not good not to give your body fuel, so you can do what you have to do. I found that when I ate breakfast, I was more focused and alert and able to do my job better.

    1. You are absolutely right in what you say Randy. I am sure others will agree with your sentiments. Thank you for posting.

  2. I've actually never heard of reducing food portions throughout the day before. It's an interesting thought and it makes sense. I don't think I could actually do it though! I eat all the time.

    1. I agree with the logic too, but don't you find that the best advice is always hard to swallow! Yes it does make sense and is easy to do once you get into the habit of taking in less.

      We shouldn't stop eating when we're full, we should stop before we get to that point.

  3. I really agree with you on this.

    Breakfast is my most important meal. If I don't have a good big breakfast I feel bad and can't focus on what I'm doing. My doctor told me the same thing you have posted, a few years ago and I try to follow it daily.

    1. Thanks Lisa. Yes you are completely right, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

      I would think it is particularly important for you as you have diabetes and would need to keep your blood sugar levels balanced constantly.

      It's a good habit to follow.
