It was because I didn't know I had a disability that my website and my book needed to happen – for the sake of my sanity, of my mental health. Where my website brings me calm, my book gives me clarity on a difficult life.
My Writing Became a Necessity
As a child, I never had any aspirations or dreams. I just knew I had a bad leg and foot. My writing became a necessity, a valuable tool that has finally given me the confidence to put one step in front of the other. I have spirituality and emotionally grown through my experiences.
My Writing has Changed my Thinking
I am a completely different person now. Writing has changed my thinking; changed my perceptions. Learning about myself through the process has brought about a sense of calm, but shouldn't be confused with everyday life. I still get to live in the ‘real world’ and still have to deal with a mental, emotional and physical disability.
My Writing isn't About Proving Myself
My writing isn't about proving myself, I needed to know about my disability, about me. Through my writing, I have learned everything about myself, I have learned that I can put pen to paper, that I can write – that my words bring clarity. Finally, I have answers, a space I feel comfortable in.

I have an overwhelming desire to solute you, because I'm so proud of you.
You started with blankness on a page and produced a masterpiece. Great job, Ilana.
Your words mean a lot, thank you so much. It is exactly why my blog works and why I continue to write Tim.
As I write and bring my experiences to life, I see the bigger picture, but where I might struggle to find the whole, the blanks are filled in through yours and others responses.
You've just filled in one of those blanks. I never thought about my book in that way, but it's true. I had no idea what a bad foot and leg meant, or that it was tied to a disability. As a child I don't think you do, all I knew is that I had something and that I needed a name.
But as soon as I penned pen to paper so to speak, the words just started pouring out. Everything I have done to get me to this point was my fate.
