Life hands us a script before we even understand we are part of the play. But that's not down to us. We are born into traditions, routines, and expectations that are so deeply ingrained in our upbringing, we already know that it's not for us to question. For some, this script is a comfortable roadmap, guiding them through familiar landscapes. For others, it feels like a cage, limiting what they can be, do, or even dream about.

Living our Parents' Lives

Many of us grow up shadowing and living our parents’ lives – not out of choice, but because we know it's our only option. When aspirations aren’t encouraged, when stepping outside the expected is a betrayal, we settle into a pattern we never designed. We're not expected to dream, to want, or to reach.

Daring to Build Something Different

Here's the but – just because you inherit a way of living doesn’t mean you have to accept it as your own.

Breaking free doesn’t mean dismissing the past or disrespecting your parents, or where you come from. It means acknowledging the foundation you were given, while daring to dream and to build something different, something that aligns with who you are. It starts with small change – a thought, a willingness to question and to action. It starts with believing that your aspirations, however small, are valid.

Conclusion

Life shouldn't come with one prescribed narrative.

As the child we have no say in how we get to live our life, unless we are encouraged to make choices. But as the adult, we can rewrite our own narrative. The challenge isn’t just in realising that we have a choice, but in having the courage to make one.
