My reflections on the impact of political decisions in the UK capture the complex emotions many feel as the General Election approaches. The series of events leading from Brexit to the present day has profoundly affected daily lives.

Politicians' influences

Politicians are often influenced by a variety of factors, including their own personal beliefs and values, the opinions of their constituents, the goals of their party or organisation, and the pressure to maintain their reputation and popularity. Additionally, they may be subject to external pressures and influences, such as lobbying efforts from special interest groups, media coverage and the desire to advance their own careers.

Brexit chaos

That said, the decision for the UK to leave the EU has left the country in chaos. Brexit is a process that has been marked by a departure from the norms of British politics and a significant departure from the principles of accountability and transparency.

Brexit Complexities

The complexities of Brexit continue to dominate the UK's political landscape.

The Brexit Process

The Brexit process has also been characterised by a lack of clear communication, ambiguous language and a general sense of uncertainty. The UK's handling of the Brexit process has been criticised for being secretive, without proper consultation or transparency.

Brexit has also highlighted deep divisions within British society. This has led to a polarised political landscape, making it challenging to find common ground and to reach consensus.

Brexit came with:

Lack of a clear plan

The Leave campaign's promises with its many players, were often vague, and the government's plans for Brexit were not fully articulated until long after the referendum. This lack of transparency and planning has led to confusion, uncertainty, and widespread concern among society.

It has Caused the Rise of populism

The Brexit debate has seen a surge in populism, with politicians appealing to emotions and nationalist sentiments, rather than evidence-based policy-making. This has contributed to a divisive and polarised political environment.

Constitutional implications

Brexit has raised fundamental questions about the UK's constitutional framework, including the role of Parliament, the relationship between the UK and Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and the future of devolution. Although these complex issues require careful consideration, the process has instead been marked by unnecessary haste and uncertainty.

Impact on EU and UK Citizens

The Brexit process has had significant consequences for EU citizens living in the UK, and for British citizens living in the EU, including uncertainty about their future rights and status. This has led to concerns about their sense of belonging.

Economic uncertainty

Brexit has also created significant economic uncertainty, with many businesses and investors struggling to adapt to the changing landscape. This has led to job security, economic growth, and stability issues. The Brexit referendum and subsequent political manoeuvres highlighted a disconnect between public sentiment and political actions.

Referendum Results

The narrow margin of the referendum result (52% Leave to 48% Remain) reflect a divided electorate. However, the political response often swung between extremes rather than seeking a middle ground.

Brexit Promises vs. Reality

Promises made throughout the Brexit campaign, such as the financial benefits for the NHS, and increased sovereignty, were contentious in their realisation, leading to accusations that public interests were sidelined for political expediency.

Conclusion

Brexit continues to represent a period of extraordinary political upheaval in the UK, characterised by significant departures from orderly governance and traditional political behaviour.

Personal ideologies and political ambitions continue to overshadow the collective good, leading to intense division and lasting impacts on UK politics, reshaping party dynamics, public trust in political institutions and the nature of political discourse itself.
