Challenging assumptions and broadening perspectives

Personal writing, which is how The CP Diary began, was one person's perspective, but it doesn't necessarily end there.

When anyone writes about something personal, the experience may be theirs, but many of the issues surrounding it are much wider. The way we respond to our differences, the assumptions we make about others and the importance we place on mental and physical wellbeing are all part of everything we share.

My writing brings attention to experiences that aren't always visible. It questions attitudes we may have come to accept without thinking about them and encourage conversations that might not otherwise happen.

For me, writing means being willing to look at an issue from more than one perspective. Our experiences can give us a starting point, but they can't always give every perspective. There is value in recognising that how something looks from where we stand may be very different from how another person experiences it.

It matters when we talk about mental health, adversity and inclusion. These aren't simply individual experiences. They are also influenced by how society responds, what it understands and, sometimes, what it fails to see.

Writing gives us an opportunity to make some of those things more visible.

As I continue to write, I believe there is value in personal writing that reaches beyond the personal. Not because one person's experience can speak for everyone, but because sharing different perspectives can encourage us to think more carefully about our own.

Perhaps that is where positive change begins – not with having all the answers, but with being willing to see something differently and that is what The CP Diary does.
