The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that almost a billion people globally are living with a mental disorder, most typically anxiety issues and depression.

Anxiety Disorders and Depression

Roughly 301 million people have an anxiety disorder, and this figure includes 58 million children and adolescents. There were 280 million individuals living with depression while the WHO’s initial estimate for the pandemic suggests an increase in mental health disorders of 26%–28%.

The Study

So, it is of significant interest that an extensive analysis of existing research reported in BJM Sports Medicine concludes that physical activity should be viewed as a first-choice treatment for people living with mental health issues.

According to the study, physical activity is 1.5 times more effective at reducing mild-to-moderate symptoms of depression, psychological stress and anxiety, than medication or cognitive behaviour therapy,

The study found all forms of exercise can benefit mental health, although higher-intensity activities produce the strongest benefits.

Exercise is effective to help with mental health

The study found that briefer exercise programmes provide more benefits than extended regimens. The benefits of physical activity interventions diminished with longer-duration programmes, meaning those with mental health issues need not commit to intensive, long-term exercise to achieve the maximum therapeutic benefit.

Pandemic stress and anxiety disorders

The pandemic is still with us and it is the reason there is now an increase in mental health disorders. I am part of the statistic increase of between 26 and 28% – truthfully, I have struggled with anxiety and depression. Before the pandemic hit, I was getting on with my life. I'm a different person today. The person I am today struggles with low level depression and anxiety brought about through the pandemic and its handling. Going out, trying to lead a normal life today makes me anxious and depressed.

The study's author concluded, it showed exercise is an effective way to treat mental health issues and can be even more effective than medication, or counselling. (Source: medicalnewstodaycom)
