Trauma doesn't just resurface in the holidays, but the holidays (Christmas) can be a catalyst for old wounds to be brought to the surface. While the holidays can be a fun time, it's not without its conflicts. Often, unresolved conflicts, family tension, and past hurts can linger beneath the surface. It’s important to acknowledge that healing cannot happen in environments that add to your pain and choosing to remove yourself from toxic, unhealthy situations and drama, isn’t selfish – often it’s an essential step for self-preservation.
Choose Not to Sacrifice your Peace
No one should feel obligated to sacrifice their peace to maintain appearances, or to meet others’ expectations. Prioritising mental health and emotional wellbeing creates a space for genuine healing and growth and should be a priority. Whether having your space means setting firm boundaries, looking for extra support, or spending the holidays in a way that nourishes you, remember you have the right to choose what is best for you. True connections are able to thrive, in spaces where you are valued and you feel safe.
Not Everyone Has Family Support
Not everyone is fortunate enough to have family support in the holidays, but often from unexpected places, there are those who may routinely step in to offer that support and care. Family isn't always defined by blood. Often, true support is often found in the people who choose to stand by you, regardless of ancestry or blood line.
