If we want to feel better, and have more energy, then look no further than exercise.
The health benefits of exercise in terms of physical activity have long been documented. When it comes to exercise, we may have good intentions.
Some of the benefits of exercise are outlined below:
Exercise & weight
Exercise may help maintain weight loss and prevent excess weight gain. We burn calories when we engage in any physical activity. The more intense the activity, the more calories we should burn. We don’t have to set aside a lot of time to exercise, to reap weight loss benefits. If you struggle with exercise, increasing chores around the house helps as does taking the stairs where possible.
Exercise & disease
Being active through exercise boosts high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or good cholesterol, whilst decreasing unhealthy triglycerides. Activity helps blood flow smoothly, which in turn decreases our risk of cardiovascular disease. Regular exercise can help us prevent and manage a wide range of health problems including; type 2 diabetes, cancer, depression and other conditions such as arthritis.
Exercise & energy
Exercise when undertaken regularly may also help increase energy levels and improve muscle tone. Physical activity delivers oxygen to the cells, which helps our cardiovascular system work more efficiently. When the heart and lungs work more efficiently, energy levels increase.
Exercise & mood
Exercise should help stimulate and boost a chemical that may help change our mood and leave us feeling happier and more relaxed. That in turn may help us feel better about ourselves and feel better with the way we look. Not only may exercise help boost our confidence; exercise may also improve our self-esteem.
Of course, other benefits to exercise include better sleep and better sex. Exercise and physical exercise are a great way for us to feel better, have fun and gain health benefits.
This is a timely reminder for me, as I do find it difficult to exercise in the winter as my main form of exercise is the road bike, but the weather in the UK between November and February is pretty poor.
I did notice a huge difference when I was cycling last summer and felt much healthier. I can't wait for the better weather, but in the meantime I'm going to look for an exercise bike to help me keep fit during the winter, when I can't get out to ride.
Thanks, yes it's always good to have something to fall back on in terms of exercise through the winter months.
It's amazing how unfit we get when we stop exercising, even if it is temporarily.
Just a thought, I find having a warm bath before I go to Physio makes my body more responsive.
Thanks Carol. Sounds good. Yes, warm baths are particularly good for muscles and muscle strains. I think you're right, and I am sure a warm bath before physio will make the body more relaxed and responsive.
