"We are made wise not by the recollection of our past, but by the responsibility for our future." - George Bernard Shaw
George Bernard Shaw's Words
George Bernard Shaw’s words remind us that wisdom is not simply a byproduct of remembering our past experiences – it is cultivated through our willingness to be accountable for what lies ahead. While our past may hold valuable lessons, it is easy to become tied to old regrets or recollections that we see as nostalgic. However, true wisdom emerges when we channel those reflections into meaningful action, using them as stepping stones rather than anchors.
Being Responsible for our Future
Being responsible for our future requires conscious awareness and thoughtful choices. It means recognising that our actions today shape the outcomes of tomorrow. It calls us to be intentional in how we treat others, how we nurture our health and wellbeing, and how we strive to grow. Wisdom, in this context, is not simply knowledge gained from experience but the ability to apply that knowledge towards building a more compassionate, authentic, and life that is purpose-driven.
Conclusion
The quote also speaks to the power of hope and forward-thinking. While our past may influence us, it does not define us. By embracing responsibility for our future, we step into a space of self-empowerment – where we are no longer bound by what was, but inspired by what can be.
Looking to the future isn't something I have had a lot of experience with, seeing as I didn't think there was a lot to look forward to.
Most of the time there really wasn't, but I have to work on changing things so 2019 will be a much better year. I have wasted far too many years dwelling on the past and things that I couldn't change, rather than focusing on the things that I could.
I don't want to be one of those people who end up like my parents in a nursing home, waiting for death with nobody caring enough to visit.
I know that I'm finally ready to be helped by the universe, or whatever may be out there to move on from the past and enjoy what future time I may have left.
Thanks Randy. Yes, you have 2019 ahead of you to be able to change things.
It doesn't matter now where you have come from because you can't change what's past, but you can change your perceptions to your experiences and how you go into next year.
When it comes to the universe of course, we must be prepared. We have to understand how the universe works and must understand its signs.
For me the sign was a conversation with my mum, a phrase that resonated with me and my circumstances that made me think about my being born and how difficult it was for her.
My blog was my fate, but fate isn't always predestined. We can go on to make our own fate, just by choosing to be proactive and make our own decisions about how we want our future to go.
I believe in looking to the past to learn from it and to apply the lessons of the past to meet the challenges of the future.
We are certainly experiencing uncertain political, social and economic times. It appears that past lessons have not been learnt.
Thank you. Yes, it's the way I work too. We must always apply the lessons of our past to meet the challenges of the future. Not to means we will continue to make mistakes.
But agree with you, politically lessons are not being learned.
