As a follow-on from my "Understanding Mental Wellness" blog, the statement "without mental wellness, there is no wellness" emphasises the crucial importance of mental health in our overall wellbeing. While we often focus on the connection between the mind and body, we tend to overlook the role of the spirit. This spiritual aspect serves as the foundation of our existence, providing the essential support that underpins both our mental and physical health.

Mental wellness is a holistic concept

Mental wellness is a holistic concept encompassing physical, mental, emotional, and social health. The absence of any one component can disrupt the balance and undermines overall wellness.

The following can impact mental wellness:

The mind, body and spirit

The mind, body and spirit are deeply interconnected. Mental health issues can manifest as physical symptoms, such as headaches, fatigue and digestive problems. Conversely, physical health issues can exacerbate mental health problems.

Mental Challenges

Just by living our lives we meet with mental challenges. Mental wellness is crucial for cognitive functions such as thinking, memory and decision-making. Poor mental health can affect these functions, our daily activities, motivation and productivity.

Consequences of Poor Mental Health

Mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety can significantly influence the onset and progression of chronic physical conditions, including chronic pain, heart disease and diabetes. When mental health declines, it often results in social isolation, disconnection and overall ill health.

How to change

Strategies for Promoting Mental Wellness

Reducing stigma is vital in society working towards promoting mental wellness. Ensuring access to mental health services and promoting early intervention are essential for fostering mental wellness. Encouraging healthy lifestyles, support and stress management techniques can all prevent the onset of mental health issues. Increasing awareness, talking about mental health and its importance, and providing education on how we can cope with mental health, can empower individuals to start their own mental wellness journey. It's how I started mine.

I was aware from an early age about mental health, because I was dealing with something I didn't know I had. And even as far back as a child, I'd worked out that without mental wellness, I would never have wellness. It's something I continue to work on to this day.

Conclusion

Mental wellness is essential – it's not just a part of overall health. Without it, you may never achieve true wellness. Mental health influences all areas of life, including physical health and daily activities. Mental health isn't being spoken about or promoted, but mental wellness should be a priority for everyone.
