Moving house can be an emotional experience under normal circumstances, but doing so after the loss of a loved one, especially a twin, can bring up a complex mix of feelings.

Today, over a two-day period, I start the process of moving house. It's going to be a significant transition for me that not only involves leaving behind a physical space near to that of my twin, but also navigating and coming to terms with the memories, emotions and connection to that of my twin that has continually tied me to the place I am leaving. I cannot heal where I am and have no choice but to leave.

For anyone losing a loved one and moving, it can bring up a host of new emotions and the following may help:

Understand Your Emotions

Leave Memories Behind

Your home may hold many memories of your twin, and leaving it might feel like you're leaving a part of them behind. This can intensify feelings of grief and make the process more challenging.

Hold On vs. Letting Go

You may feel torn between wanting to hold on to the past and knowing that moving is a step you need to take. It's normal to feel conflicted about this.

Facing the Unknown

Moving to a new place can bring anxiety about the unknown. This can be amplified by the fear of losing the comfort that familiar surroundings provided during your grieving process.

Changing Dynamics

The change in environment might also feel like a shift in your relationship with your twin, which can be unsettling.

A New Beginning

Moving can also represent a fresh start. It can be an opportunity to create new memories and find healing in a new space.

Personal Growth

The move can signify your personal growth and your ability to move forward. Moving forward can still mean honouring the memory of your twin, or loved one.

Give Yourself Permission to Feel

Allow yourself to experience whatever emotions come up for you. Whether it's sadness, anger, guilt, or even relief if that's how you feel, all your feelings and emotions are valid. Talk to someone you trust, or if you've also lost a twin, speak to your loved one out loud, or in your heart, because that can help process your emotions.

Take the Process Slowly

You don't have to rush the move or the process of settling into your new home. Take the time you need to say goodbye to your old home and gradually adjust to the new one. Packing can be especially emotional, so consider doing it in stages, or asking for help if it becomes overwhelming.

Hold onto Meaningful Items

If there are items in your home that hold particular significance to your relationship, consider taking them with you. These will help maintain a sense of connection.

Practice Self-Compassion

Be gentle with yourself. Understand that it is going to be difficult and it is okay to struggle with your move – that you're doing the best you can during a very difficult time.

Moving Forward

It is important to remember that while the physical move might be challenging, your bond with your twin (or loved one) isn’t tied to a specific place. Their memory and the connection you shared with them will travel with you wherever you go. This new chapter, while daunting, can also be a space where you shall continue to honour your twin (and loved one) to build a life that reflects their memory and your growth. It's what I shall try to continue to do.
