From a young age, with something I didn't know I had or that it was a disability, I faced numerous obstacles. Simple tasks that most children take for granted – like walking normally – was incredibly challenging for me. Learning was also a daily challenge. Physical therapy and countless doctor and hospital visits also became a regular part of my life.
Disability and differences
As I started to grow up, in school I became increasingly aware of the differences between myself and my peers. I struggled to fit in and was often excluded from playground activities because I failed to fit in. Always observing from the sidelines, I somehow became more determined to grow up mentally and emotionally stronger.
My passion for Writing
Eventually through a late cerebral palsy diagnosis in my forties, I discovered my passion for writing. Through words, I could transport myself to different worlds where my disability existed, but it was not a hindrance. Writing became my escape from the storm that constantly surrounded me. It allowed me to dream, and to believe in a brighter future.
Cerebral Palsy doesn't consume me anymore
While the storm of cerebral palsy raged on, I refused to let it consume me. Life with a mental and physical disability is far from easy and there are days when the storm is overwhelming mentally, but I am learning to find the calm, the resilience, to try to get past the stigma, and that allows me to keep moving forward, despite the challenges.
Finding purpose
But my blog isn't just about learning to cope and understand a disability I didn't know I had. No, it's a lifestyle blog for others too. I initially set it up to find out about myself, to finding meaning, and to give myself a purpose. In 13+ years, it is a lifestyle blog that has brought me understanding, clarity and a purpose for others too.
My book Cerebral Palsy: 'A Story' is about embracing the storm, learning from my life and to rise above my challenges. It's purposeful.
