The psyche is the totality of the human mind, conscious and unconscious. It represents one of the fundamental concepts for understanding human nature. The psyche is the driving force behind our personality traits and behind our characters. Together they make up our personalities.

Because much of our thinking and behaviour is driven by our beliefs, habits, attitudes, and assumptions that are so deep in our psyche, we are not always fully aware of them.

It is the unconscious part of our brain that communicates with the conscious and it is that which provides us with the meaning to all our interactions with the world, as filtered through our beliefs and habits. The psyche communicates through feelings, imagination, emotions, dreams and sensations.

The psyche defines us, our characters, how we are and how we behave. In our personal journey of self-understanding and emotional growth, it is important we explore our psyche, to understand why we may appear a certain way. Once we’re aware of our psyche, we can work to change those aspects of our character and behaviour that we feel needs changing.

The psyche knows everything about us. It knows if we’re being stubborn, or inconsiderate, it knows when we’re kind and caring, it knows if we’re moody. The psyche knows us more than we know ourselves, because it lies deep within our unconscious and is us. But unless we know how to tap into our unconscious and connect with our psyche, nothing within us can ever change.

The psyche is our personal coding to just about everything. Tapping into our psyche allows us to change certain aspects of our personality for the better.

  1. I think my psyche has changed over the past year. My whole outlook is different; my behaviors are a little different and just about everything else is different in some way.

I don't think it's a real bad change, though it annoys me. I really don't know how to handle it sometimes. I feel more dependent and I don't like it!

    1. Thanks Lisa. Yes, your psyche has noted the changes. Given what you went through, I would be concerned if you came through the other end the same person. Life changing situations make it impossible for us to do that. We close one door and then must re-open another door.

That said Lisa, what you went through clearly has changed how you see yourself, your values and how you approach and see your life; how you also see others, what you see now compared to what you saw before illness took a hold and that's not a bad thing, as you say. Perhaps more of us need to see these things now.

I also get that you're feeling more dependent. Until you're emotionally through the other end and you've given yourself time to try to find a different version of you, on what you've had to deal with, you will feel more dependent; but where you can and feel more comfortable making decisions, I am sure your family will encourage you to do so and you must be encouraged too.

Don't look back at what you've been through. That will be more difficult for you, but instead, try to understand why you are where you are and re-invent yourself with what you're left with.

Not only will you feel happier, but you will become more accepting of your new circumstances.

  2. Sometimes I think my psyche is changing constantly. Sometimes I focus on it a little too much and overthink. Is that a bad thing?

    1. Thanks Bonnie. It's important our psyche changes. A psyche that changes, shows we're growing emotionally and spiritually. It's when our psyche doesn't change, we're not learning our lessons.

Focusing on your psyche isn't always a bad thing Bonnie, unless you're overthinking is bringing about more negativity, then it's probably time to re-think your thinking and how you focus on your psyche.

Sadly, we can talk ourselves into many things, not all of them good.
