When Attention Becomes One-Sided

In everyday life, most of us will meet – or sometimes be the person who dominates a space. That space doesn’t have to be loud, but it’s often loud enough for others to feel unheard or unseen. Ego or mental health is often part of the problem. In communication, conversational dominance can show up subtly: a discussion shifts direction, a story gets redirected, or your perspective is quietly dismissed because it doesn’t align with someone else’s view.

These communication patterns don’t just exist “out there” – they exist everywhere. They walk among us, and, if we’re not careful, they can even live within us. Developing emotional intelligence and empathy in communication helps us to recognise when we’re not truly listening.

It reminds us that healthy conversations depend on balance – on creating space where every voice is heard and respected.

Common Patterns

  • Consolidating – steering discussions back to our own experiences rather than listening fully;
  • Deflecting Shifting responsibility – for mistakes onto others in families, or partnerships, instead of accepting accountability;
  • Minimising – brushing off or invalidating someone’s concerns as unimportant or exaggerated;
  • Demanding validation – needing regular praise or reassurance while offering little acknowledgment in return – a hallmark of unhealthy relationship patterns.

When these happen in isolation, it doesn't mean something is “wrong” with that person. We may all fall into them at times. But when they become a consistent way of relating, and living, they damage trust, respect, and connection.

The Costs

Relationships become one-directional. You feel invisible, anxious, or feel you're continually “at fault.”

Taking Stock

  • Conversations in one-sided relationships are often redirected back to the same person;
  • Criticism in relationships – acknowledgment is rare;
  • Controlling behaviour – may show up as shifting responsibility onto others;
  • Minimising feelings – experiences of others.

Restoring Balance

Awareness is the first step towards balance. Healthy relationships depend on balance. When conversations become one-sided – whether through narcissism, or helicopter parenting – the effects can be drainingdamaging and long-lasting.

By learning to recognise controlling behaviour, setting boundaries, and reflecting on our own habits, we can move towards healthier family dynamics and stronger, more supportive relationships.

Even small changes in how we listen, respond, and take responsibility can help shift toxic behaviour into healthier connections.
