The scientists are clear about reducing waste, climate change, environmental impacts. It is important to help reduce our carbon footprint, save the planet, reduce waste, not only for us now, but for future generations, so that they may have a life.

We Should be Taking Care of the Planet

It is important to take care of the planet. We should be taking care of the planet. It has now become critical to think about how we live.

The following points will help:

Reducing Food Waste

Cook what you need: buy the food you’re going to eat, and make sure it's well within date. What we normally do is overbuy, store and if they're not used, they're usually thrown. Also, recycling prevents excess waste from heading for landfill, which is a big problem.

Storing Food

Learning how to store food properly is important to extend its shelf-life, and reduce home waste. The idea is to keep food fresher for longer. Investing more in quality airtight containers for cereals, baking ingredients, pasta, lentils and rice. Loose food items, can be stored successfully in reusable containers.

Composting

A lot of what we throw away could be composted and returned back to the earth. The garden will be full of nutrients, food won’t go to waste, and we will feel better about the impact we’re having on the planet.

Support your Local Shops

Continue to support the local economy like the independents, they rely on our custom and continued goodwill. Instead of heading straight to the supermarket, choose to visit the local farmer’s market, or green grocers. It’s a good way to find more zero waste options, bargains on fruit and vegetables. Easing yourself into the community through shopping locally and that's always a good thing.

Cancel Subscriptions

Anything you order on line means you’ve already subscribed and subscribing means you’ll receive their brochure. If you're genuinely not going to order again, it may be a good idea to remember to cancel your subscription and stop other unsolicited junk mail. It may be an inconvenience to ring and cancel your subscription, but reducing paper waste should reduce significantly as will our carbon footprint.

Use Cloth Bags

We don’t all live a zero-waste lifestyle, but we can at least try from the comfort of our own homes. Little changes can be implemented, like swapping from plastic to cloth bags, making a concerted effort to recycle bottles and cardboard packaging. These can make all the difference.

Recycle

Understanding how to recycle is the key to us reducing home waste productively, to understand the recycling rules. We should continue to use reusable durable bags that can be used when grocery shopping. Recycle unwanted toys, clothes and shoes and only buy what you may need.

Composting and Other Ways to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Start composting. A lot of what we throw away could be composted and returned back to the earth. The garden will be full of nutrients, food won’t go to waste, and we can feel better about the impact we’re having on the planet. Use loose-leaf tea instead of teabags, say no to drinking straws, buy from second hand stores, including electronics, plan your meals so food isn't wasted.

  1. Great advice here.

The most effective way to reduce waste is not to create it in the first place and we can all play our own part in that.

We have to change our mindset to a more sustainable way and take responsibility for looking after the planet for future generations.

    1. Thank you. I agree we can play our part and must. We must rely on ourselves to be and take responsibility for reducing waste.

It's the same old adage. 'It won't happen or affect me, or we have time' both are heavily misguided. It is already affecting us and the planet. Climate change is happening whether we agree it is, and we don't have time.

We are killing the planet. We must look and change our practices, so future generations will be supported long after we're gone.

  2. Reducing waste is one of many things that people need to do, but it has to be a global effort which has become the biggest problem.

We have countries that are trying to make a difference but then so many other countries dump their waste in the backyard and don't really seem to give a damn.

What it comes down to, is money. The people who have the most, don't have to live in the same world as the rest of us. I grew up being treated like I was poor, so I know all too well how that works and it is truly very sad.

What's even sadder is that by the time people choose to change their ways, it may be too late, if it isn't already too late now.

    1. Yes, I agree reducing waste needs to be a global effort. Scientists agree. It's up to countries and individuals to take their comments on board.

We can all start by 'doing our bit.' It's not enough for us to put off 'reducing waste' or think because we won't be around in years to come, then it's okay.

It's not okay because what we're doing, is killing the planet. We cannot reverse the damage, but cities must continue to concentrate and upgrade the infrastructures already in place, in order to tackle global warming.

All governments must be on board with this, including China and the United States. It needs to happen to help us keep the planet safe for future generations.
