A passing thought:

Conversations will be more meaningful and less tense if we ‘talk the same language.’ That sounds so obvious and easy to do, but how many of us actually do it?

It’s tempting when we’re keen to get our point across, to charge ahead; then get annoyed with the other person when we’ve misunderstood the conversation, or we think we’ve understood the conversation and the other person thinks we haven’t, then we end up talking at cross-purposes.

If we listened carefully instead of fretting about what we were going to use as our next response, we'd more likely understand the conversation. We’d finally be speaking and listening on the same wavelength.

  1. A friend of mine used to say that I assumed a lot. That was years ago.

I try to listen now to what a person is saying and act accordingly. But you are right in the heat of the moment sometimes we try to get our point across at all cost.

It usually doesn't end well doing that.

    1. Wow! It must have been very difficult to hear that from a friend without taking offence, but sometimes home truths help us change the way we deal with things; whether they're difficult to hear or not.

I think that what you did was very common. The hard part is changing those habits to reflect a more positive outcome. That's great.
