The quote, “I wanted to remember in order to be able to return” by Anaïs Nin deeply resonates with me. It captures how I feel about memory and its connection to my experiences and my past. Nin, known for exploring the complexities of emotions, relationships, and the self, helps me to understand how memory serves as a bridge between the past and present. It allows for a symbolic or emotional return to moments that not only hold meaning, but moments and memories I struggled with.

Memories are An Active Tool

Memory isn't just a passive record of events. Memories should be an active tool – a way to reflect and re-immerse yourself in pivotal experiences that shape who you are. Indeed, that is what has happened to me. Remembering becomes an act of preservation, helping you to relive and then reinvent another path – but ensuring that your experiences, important moments aren’t lost to the passage of time.

Memory for me, is about revisiting emotional landscapes, whether it's personal growth, or lessons learned. By investigative journalling into my life is priceless. I understand my life. I didn't have that before I started my writing journey. We all have to put in the work.

Conclusion

As I continue to write, to return, to remember – to deal with my past, those writings continue to shape how I view my perceptions, my experiences, my life. I see the value in blending reflections – both personal and universal into something meaningful, not only for me, but also for my readers. It’s a way to honour your past while continuing to grow and evolve in the present.

Her words remind us that the act of remembering is vital because with work on ourselves, it allows us to return to what truly matters.
