Skipping or jump rope is a great exercise for those who have busy lifestyles, who don’t like exercise, hate going to the gym, or know they have to do something in the way of exercise.

It’s not surprising therefore that skipping is ever more popular amongst celebrities. So what are the benefits of skipping?

Its benefits include:

  • The effort it takes to skip for 10 minutes is equivalent to running a mile in eight minutes;
  • Skipping has less impact on our joints than running does;
  • It's a good workout for all levels of fitness and is something you can do at your own pace;
  • It helps improve blood pressure and heart rate;
  • Skipping is a full body workout;
  • According to the British Rope Skipping Association, (BRSA) just 10 minutes of skipping can have the same health benefits as a 45-minute jog;
  • Skipping improves flexibility;
  • Regular skipping improves muscle tone in the lower and upper body;
  • One hour of skipping can burn up to 1,300 calories;
  • Skipping improves balance and co-ordination.

Finally, skipping is also a weight bearing exercise; helps improve bone density that helps combat Osteoporosis. It's also quick 'n' easy and is an amazing way to keep fit, without having to put too much effort in.

  1. I can see the benefits of skipping but unfortunately for me it is one exercise that really sets off my bad back.

    It's a real shame, as it's a simple exercise that can be done at home, within minimal expense and great benefits as you point out.

    1. Yes I agree. It's important to find out what works for you and stick with the winning formula. I used to skip myself, but it's probably not a good idea for me either, since I have a problem with leg length.

      I need to make sure my joints stay strong, so I've had to find other means of exercise, which are less stressful on my joints. I would still recommend this exercise.
