Everything that happens to us, good or bad, starts with a solitary thought. When we tap into our cognitive and emotional capabilities, to meet the ordinary demands of everyday life, and we function successfully, we know we are emotionally and psychologically well.

I struggled with my mental health

As a child growing up without knowing about my disability that I would later find out about, I struggled with my mental health, and was plagued with bad thoughts. I still struggle.

The power of our thoughts and emotions, should never be underestimated, particularly our unconscious thoughts. If we leave those for long enough, they can start to influence what happens to us. The key to that is self-care.

The unconscious thinking

Consciously we may choose how we think, but it is our unconscious thoughts that are the driving force behind some of our decisions. When we have control and understand what those are, we will start to make better choices.

It is important to identify with your emotions, to recognise they can help you, to continue to link in to how you feel. For you to safeguard your emotions in the longer-term, it is important to focus on the things you have control over; to let go of the things you don’t have control over.

Controlling our reactions

Where we may not always have control of our unconscious thoughts, we have control of our reactions. We get to choose how we see a particular situation, even if that situation was brought in by someone else.

The power of our thoughts should never be ignored. It is important to take control of how you feel. When it comes to our emotions, each of us get to choose how we deal with those.
