When Love Feels Like Control: Healing from Toxic Relationships

To understand controlling relationships is to heal from those relationships.

There’s a subtle kind of suffering that comes from living under someone else’s control. It’s not always dramatic or loud. Often, it arrives quietly – in the form of guilt tripping, criticism, and silent treatment.

It could look like love, loyalty, or concern. But underneath, it’s about someone else shaping your choices, your words, even your identity, to suit their lifestyle It often starts in childhood.

Sometimes, it may sneak in through relationships that feel claustrophobic or too entangled. Either way, it creates a heavy weight:

  • One part of you wants to keep the peace;
  • One part of you wants to walk away, but you're guilt tripped into staying, so you stay connected;
  • The other part of you just wants to breathe.

When Control Doesn’t Look Like Control

Instead, it might show up as:

  • Someone needing to know where you are all the time;
  • Criticism disguised as love, concern;
  • Guilt-tripping or the silent treatment when you say no;
  • Being emotionally manipulated.

Where over time, you begin to doubt yourself. You begin to ask: Is this normal? Is this love? Am I overreacting? In short, no, you’re not.

How to Get Past Controlling Relationships

Getting past someone’s control doesn’t mean it has to be a fight. It can simply mean walking away until you're comfortable enough to tackle the control. It also means waking up to the truth, and reclaiming your voice. It can also mean seeing emotional manipulation for what it is – not something you're obligated to fix, but something you need to step back from.

At some point, you may also come to realise that peace isn’t found in people-pleasing. Instead, it’s found in being honest with yourself.

Breaking Free from Control

Healing from control isn’t instant – it’s a gradual reclaiming of self. Once you recognise control, the next step is learning how to heal from it.

This is what breaking free from control looks like:

  • The first time you say “no” and you don’t explain;
  • The moment you stop chasing external approval;
  • The shift when you start trusting your intuition more than their opinions;
  • The moment you stop absorbing other people’s emotions as your own;
  • It’s about emotional healing –your healing;
  • You break free from the version of yourself they created for their comfort.

Healing from Controlling Relationships

  • Freedom starts with awareness;
  • Then boundaries;
  • Then self-trust;
  • And eventually finding your peace.

It doesn’t come quickly, it doesn’t come without its difficulties. But it is possible – it is necessary and it's worth it. Don't give up and don't stop trying.

Thought for thought:
Getting past someone else’s control isn’t selfish, because you were never meant to live someone else’s life. You were meant to live your own. You're not alone.
