Thinking Twice About That Hot Dog? A New Study Raises Concerns

Grilling in the backyard, sharing simple meals, and spending time with loved ones – these small rituals often anchor us in a sense of connection and comfort. But every now and then, something we read prompts us to stop and reflect, not just on the traditions, but on our choices, including what we eat and why.

What The New Study Found

The research, which was published on June 30th 2025 in Nature Medicine, looked at how everyday foods – like processed meats, sugary drinks, and trans fats – are linked to serious health issues, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and colorectal cancer.

For example, a typical hot dog weighs in at around 50 grams. The findings found that eating that much processed meat daily was associated with at least an 11% higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, compared to those who didn’t eat any. The risk for colorectal cancer went up too, by at least 7%.

Risk Rises with Every Bite

These numbers weren’t just random blips. The researchers saw a clear trend: Habitual consumption of even small amounts of processed meat, sugary drinks, and trans fatty acids are linked to the increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and colorectal cancer.” According to Dr. Demewoz Haile, study’s lead author

No Truly Safe Amount

Dr. Nita Forouhi, a nutrition expert at the University of Cambridge who wasn’t involved in the study, echoed those concerns. She told CNN –there may be no truly safe amount of processed meat to consume regularly. In her view, it’s healthiest to eat these foods only occasionally, if at all. This isn’t about guilt or giving up every comfort food we love.

Other Lifestyle Factors

Other lifestyle factors like smoking, income level, and access to healthcare – often correlate with high processed food consumption and may contribute to the observed health risks. Despite these findings, experts stress that there's no need to panic.

Food is not just a source of nutrients – it plays a central role in culture, pleasure, family life, and social connection,” Gunter Kuhnle nutrition professor, Reading University, U.K.

A Balanced Approach

The consensus among experts is to aim for balance, not perfection. A healthy dietary pattern includes:

Fruits
Vegetables
Whole grains
Legumes
Nuts
Yogurt
