A Quiet Bond, A Life Forever Changed

Grief after the loss of a twin is deeply misunderstood. Many people assume twin relationships are defined by mirrored identities and continual closeness. But not all twins share that dynamic. Some grow side by side as independent individuals, connected quietly rather than symbiotically. When your twin dies, the grief can feel deeply personal – and painfully invisible.

Losing an independent twin isn’t about losing a reflection of yourself; it’s about losing someone who existed alongside you, sharing history, sharing time, and a bond no one else fully understood. The connection may have been unspoken, but the foundations for us were always there.

Twin grief is isolating. The loss of a twin shows up differently – through memories, through the quiet realisation that future milestones are now faced alone. Grieving a twin isn’t always loud or obvious. Her absence is constant. The pain is no less real because the relationship looked different.

There is no rule book for twin loss grief. You don’t need to “move on” or redefine yourself completely. I’m moving forward and for me, grief after losing a twin means learning how to carry her memory while staying true to who I am.

My twin shaped my life. She shaped all of our lives. We didn’t always get it right, but the twin bond continues, not as a mirror, but as a presence that remains part of me, and part of all of us.
