Something inspirational:

“My dad had limitations. That's what my good-hearted mom always told us. He had limitations, but he meant no harm. It was kind of her to say, but he did do harm.”

  1. We all have limitations but that’s no excuse for doing harm to others, whether that harm is done meaningfully or not.

  2. I guess I'll have to watch that movie again, seeing as I must have missed that part. My dad had a lot of limitations and I don't think that he could ever comprehend how much harm he really did.

My parents never tried to explain much of anything to us and nothing that happened to us when we were children ever really made any sense. Them trying to explain anything probably wouldn't have helped anyway.

It just would have been nice to have had some idea of what was going on, rather than always having to figure out things on our own.

    1. Thanks Randy. Yes, it doesn't matter what a parent says to a child on behalf of another parent, children innately come to learn what their parents do and don't do.

To do what you ask Randy takes a different kind of parenting. You didn't get that kind. But I think you're right about your father. Whilst most parents do have their limitations, consciously parents don't think about the harm they cause.

Whilst their unconscious thoughts aren't being addressed, particularly around abuse, their behaviour doesn't change and which is why abused children often become abusers as adults.
