This is an interesting quote especially in view of its author.
Reaching agreement with other people is a valuable skill and to reach solutions in which all parties feel satisfied, listened to and taken seriously is a major achievement.
However when inflated egos are introduced into the equation then compromise is never a good outcome as what we are allowing those people to do is refusing to learn and grow, and in doing so we undermine ourselves and our integrity.
Thanks. Yes, you're right. The ego gives us reason not to learn and grow. When you look at what we have in the world, it's easy to see how many people use their ego as a way to communicate, rather than themselves.
I love this quote and I have always liked Gordon Ramsay because what you see is what you get. He tells you how things are, rather than how you would want them to be.
I agree on his shows he comes across as a larger than life character, but how we are on t.v. isn't always how we are in our personal lives and having seen him on t.v. working with his daughter he comes across as a really nice guy.
It's clear he's a good guy and his heart is in the right place. Underneath his t.v. persona he cares and dotes on his family. It's easy to see and I love it.
I think it's wise to compromise and encourage people, it's a sure way to be a human being. Consider it a secret agreement with the universe and your soul.
But be ready to be disappointed, as some will take your humanity as weakness, until you convince them otherwise. I can tell you some stories about that.
Tim, for those of us who don't understand how spirituality or the ego works, your second sentence in your first paragraph is absolutely spot on.
To compromise and encourage people is an agreement with the universe and our soul. We are spiritual beings, it's what the universe wants for us. It's a sure way for us to be better human beings.
When anyone thinks about and puts others first, they're offering 'humanity' that certainly isn't a weakness.
