Autism isn’t easy to navigate. My mental and emotional struggles go as far back as a child, even though I had no idea I had autism. Now in Covid-19, I continue to have to navigate the world with autism and it doesn’t come without a struggle.
My autism mainly manifests itself in:
- Anxiety and fear;
- Little to no eye contact;
- Responding to social interactions, but not initiating them;
- Resistance to being touched;
- Difficulty understanding figures of speech, jokes and/or sarcasm.
Through my intuition and insight I manage the issues below:
- Sharing experiences or observations with others;
- Reading another person’s body language and/or facial expressions;
- Offering comments which sometimes have no connections to the current conversation;
- Being unaware and/or disinterested in what is going on around me;
- Being incapable of understanding other people’s feelings;
- Difficulty in reading people’s motives behind their actions.
Other people's autism may present differently, but it is important for others who are in contact with someone with autism, to give them time and be patient. We are trying our best.
