In my thirties, I found myself in a situation where I could no longer ignore or dismiss my mental health as simply feeling stressed or down. It became evident there was something deeper and more complex that I needed to deal with.

For me, understanding was crucial in gaining insight into how I felt about growing up with what I later learned was a disability I didn't know I had. Autism was going to make it more difficult.

Asking for help

Mental health is complex. Asking for help is crucial for anyone dealing with mental health issues. It can be difficult to reach out, especially when there is a lack of visible symptoms, but it is important to remember that seeking help is a sign of strength.

Education and understanding mental health, plays a significant role in managing mental health issues and breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health. By educating ourselves and others, we can create a supportive and healthy environment, and promote empathy and understanding for those struggling with mental health. I wish I'd had that as a child.

Support networks are vital

Building a support network is essential for managing mental health. This can include friends, family, therapists, support groups, or online communities. Surrounding ourselves with people who are understanding and supportive of mental health, can make a world of difference in your mental health journey. The CP Diary can also help.

Self-care is critical

Self-care is crucial when it comes to managing mental health. Practicing mindfulness or meditation, and engaging in activities that bring joy, getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, and exercising regularly are all important components of self-care. Finding what works best for you and incorporating it into your daily routine, can greatly improve your mental well-being.

Progress takes time

Managing mental health issues is an ongoing process. Once you start on your mental health journey, it needs to continue. It takes time and effort to develop coping mechanisms and strategies that work for you. It is important to be patient with yourself and understand that progress may be slow at times. Celebrate even the smallest victories and remember that setbacks are a normal part of the journey.

Mental health can be complex and challenging

I wasn't aware just how complex my mental health issues were or how challenging it was all going to be. Mental health isn't always visibly apparent. It may become apparent when what we do is out of character for us and it's noticed by someone else. Seeking help, educating ourselves, building a support network, practicing self-care, and being patient with the process are all important steps towards managing mental health and promoting overall well-being.

Each of our mental health is valid

It is crucial to recognise that everyone's experience with mental health is different. It's not a competition to see whose mental health is the worst. It is about creating a compassionate and inclusive space, where everyone can seek help without judgment.
