Learning Agency Late

With late agency, there is a system in place long before you understand what systems are – an early life conditioning that quietly shapes the future. It's not introduced. It doesn't need to be. Everyone behaves as if it has always been there, which meant that for them, it always had.

For many children, decisions are presented as sequences, not choices. They move from one expectation to the next, because it's expected and because there is no choice. Children don't recognise or understand personal autonomy.

Over time, the adult may come to learn which questions still remain unanswered, which ones produce consequences, and which ones don't form at all. They adapt through survival. Possibilities close. Other skills develop – the useful ones, the ones that keep the system and their life running smoothly.

Compliance, observation and precision becomes a life choice. You become talented in reading rooms. A talent for surviving days that don't have explanation. Reading the room helps.

These are common survival strategies that form under long-term control. By the time many people began to notice their shape, they are already shaped by them. There is little space for resistance. There is nowhere for it to stand.

Only patterns. Years follow one another in a recognisable order. Some relationships never form, while others form exactly as they were meant to. Nothing is exaggerated. Nothing about it requires defence.

For those who recognise this experience, there is no need to apologise. But the outcome is often something that requires continued work – to change. It inevitably will continue if the patterns aren't broken. General patterns tend to form early. Reclaiming agency and breaking generational patterns usually take years to break.

It is the record of a life conducted inside the conditions that produced it.
