We hide from our truth. We put on a façade when we continue to pretend we’re okay, when in reality we mask a loss of hope. Imagine a feeling of freedom if you weren’t living behind one.

Hiding behind a façade becomes even more difficult over time, because how we really feel and what we deal with never goes away and keeping up appearances doesn’t help, because in the real world it gives people a false understanding of who we really are.

As we fail to speak our own truth on what we feel and what we deal with, it’s not something we can easily hide. After a while it becomes obvious to others, we’re hiding behind what we deal with that all is not what it seems with us.

Living with Difference

Seen, Misjudged, Rarely Understood For most of my life, I lived in the dark. Not because I didn't know I was different, but because I didn't yet have the understanding to explain why life always felt harder than it seemed to be ...

What Writing Taught Me About Self-Understanding

How writing became more than a creative outlet When I started writing, I had no idea where it would lead. I simply needed somewhere to put my thoughts – a place to make sense of experiences I struggled to understand ...

  1. I agree with you. We shouldn't hide behind our problems, or put on a face when we're struggling.

When we do things like this we are pushing others away who may be able to help us deal with whatever we're going through. It's just plain out lying to others.

  2. I think instinctively some people hide behind facades to protect themselves from people ready to exploit any sign of perceived weakness and vulnerability and when power itself grows from individual suffering it can lead to a situation of personal victimization. I think it's a matter of trusting someone to handle our truth without being labeled and passing judgment.

I'm not sure if it's our intention to give people a false understanding of who we are; when we may not know who we really are ourselves.

  3. "You can't handle the truth!" is the expression that always comes to mind when I think about dealing with it!

I've spent most of my life hiding from it which has only served to make me feel like a stranger in my own skin. People act so surprised when someone who seems so happy (like Robin Williams) kills themselves but we have no idea what he was going through at the time. I've been wearing a mask for so long that I wouldn't know what to do without it.

I think that's why I like zombie movies so much because I've felt like one of the walking dead for so long that I wouldn't know the difference. It is truly so hard to even contemplate "living" as a human being when I've felt so much less than that all my life!

    1. I am sure you can handle the truth Randy. You just have to believe in yourself to know that you can handle the truth and I believe you can. Speak your own truth. I believe in you.

  4. I believe the reason people live behind a facade is because they are afraid to show how they truly feel and be judged for it.

In my part, I am one way out in public and at home I'm my genuine self. I feel that we should express how we truly feel and if people are uncomfortable with it… so what!

    1. Thanks Maria. I think you're right, but be yourself anyway in or out of the house. Being a certain way and hiding how we really are or feel is harder for anyone in the longer term.

If others are uncomfortable, that's their issue not ours. Perhaps we all need to learn new lessons in how to let people just be, regardless of what we have to deal with.

We shouldn't hide or be a certain way just to help others out and for reasons mentioned in your response.

  5. I think we all probably hide from the truth to some degree; unfortunately it's part of the many balances we have to achieve in life.

When we judge it is important though, we must always speak and stand up for the truth though and stand by the consequences too.
