We all think differently, shaped by our unique identities, opinions, and attitudes. Yet, we often expect others to see the world as we do, to share our values, and to live by our standards.
We like to think of ourselves as open-minded, but true openness means embracing perspectives that differ from our own. Too often, we struggle with this. As a society, we have grown increasingly self-focused, rigid in our beliefs, and resistant to viewpoints that challenge our own. Genuine tolerance means allowing space for differences – not just in theory, but in practice.
Working from the Ego
Many people work from their ego and have an inflated view of themselves and think they're better than everyone else. They base their opinions on what they know, without giving wider thought to their opinions.
Conclusion
But the truth is we shouldn't enforce opinions on others. How we see the world and how we choose to live is right for us. What we choose to see, how we choose to react, what we choose to let go of is also right for us. What others choose to do and see is right for them.
If only the rest of the world could learn how to live this way, there would be peace on Earth. This is one of the many suggestions in AA that I wish more people would listen to, they worry too much about what everyone else is doing.
There are far too many people who don't understand the concept of boundaries and minding their own business, but are intent on forcing their beliefs and values on everyone else.
I grew up as what I would call a 'force-fed Baptist' where we were supposed to believe what the church believed in, but behind closed doors they were the worst sinners who didn't practice what they were preaching.
At this point I want to live my life the way I want to live it, without feeling the guilt, shame and remorse that I was buried under as a child. I have been dealing with those people lately who are the worst hypocrites, but since they do a lot of good for other people, I don't have much of a choice.
My biggest issue has always been where people try to force their beliefs and values on me and expect me to accept their values without question. Last time I checked we live in a free country and have the right to believe what we believe in, whether others agree with us, or not.
I didn't grow up in a politically correct world so I don't think the same way as others do, but I believe in the 'live and let live' philosophy, as long as they will do the same for me.
Thanks Randy. Yes, they must. Sadly, all religions and cultures base their lives on a 'do as I say, not as I do,' mentality.
You allow others to 'live and let live' and that's the right thing to do. Just be who you are, eventually others will have no choice but to fall into line.
The world needs to be less divided, relationships need to be less acrimonious and they would be if we all took the same view. It needs to happen if future generations are to have a future that promotes love and peace.
We must all act to change things now.
