It is important to recognise that politics continues to have a significant impact on mental health and wellbeing. By working together, we can create a more supportive and equitable society where everyone's mental health needs are acknowledged, valued and addressed.
Politicians
Politicians often use divisive language and rhetoric to appeal to certain groups of voters, create a sense of us vs them, and drive emotional responses. This can include demonising immigrants, minorities, or other groups, blaming specific individuals or political parties for problems, or using fear tactics to create a sense of urgency.
Research has shown that this kind of rhetoric can be damaging for social cohesion, polarise communities and increase hostility towards certain groups, lead to discrimination, and undermine trust in democratic institutions.
Government Leaders and their decisions
The decisions taken by government leaders can affect individuals and communities in profound ways and it's crucial we hold them to account for their actions. In times of uncertainty, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. During these challenging times, there are people who need support, whether through emotional support, by listening, or financial aid. We can all offer comfort and stability to those who are struggling.
Leaders need to prioritise
It's time for leaders to prioritise the wellbeing of its citizens, rather than playing political games. We need leaders who listen to experts, take decisive action, and prioritise the needs of the most vulnerable in our society. Until then, we need to continue to speak out and hold our leaders accountable for the consequences of their actions or lack thereof.
Governments need to be held to account
All of this has made for anxious and stressful times. We can’t ignore politics because it is affecting our lives. It’s a vicious cycle that feeds into our mental health struggles. We need to continue to hold governments accountable, to demand transparency and truth and to fight for the rights of individuals, regardless of their status or background.
We can make a difference
But we also need to remember that change is possible, and that our actions, no matter how small, can make a difference. So, let's continue to speak out, to fight for what is right, to never give up hope for a better future.
It is important to note that not all politicians engage in such divisive tactics. There are many examples of leaders who work to bridge divides and promote inclusion within their communities.
It it, however, time to be honest about its impact on us.
