If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ll know that themes of neglect and abandonment often come up. Although these experiences have profoundly shaped my life, I am aware they could influence my thoughts, and my reflections through my writing, but instead I have chosen to use those experiences – to help me transform pain into purpose.
The Loss of My Twin
The loss of my twin has reignited and stirred some of the old feelings, influencing how I continue to perceive and process feelings of emotional neglect and abandonment. December will mark three years since I lost my twin – three years since I watched her fight slip away. The journey has been painful, but it has also been a catalyst for my own deep spiritual growth.
Looking back, I see how our lives were shaped by different paths, yet bound by the same thread. In many ways, I am fortunate to have found a way through. The experience changed me, reshaping my perspective and deepening my understanding of my own life and journey. Through 15 years of a blog, I am no longer the person I once was. The challenges I have continued to face have not defined me – instead, they have guided me toward a different, more reflective way of being.
The World Fails to Understand Twin-Hood
Sadly, the world fails to understand the intricate bond that exists between twins, and we have both always been accustomed to being misunderstood. Although twin-hood is not as rare as it used to be when my we were born, many still don't think about a twin's environment and upbringing – the deep psychological connection and the mirrored mannerisms.
A Sense of Abandonment
My twin didn't have it easy. Neither of us did. But for me, navigating my formative years as the second twin, with a disability I didn't know I had, amplified neglect and abandonment – both of which I couldn’t quite articulate at the time.
Why Not Share your Experiences
I invite you to share your experiences. How have you navigated your journey through your own challenges? Have you struggled, are you still struggling? if you would like to tell your story, please get in touch.
I haven't done a very good job of working through my issues over the years. My daughter hasn't spoken to me since 2018 but I never really had the chance to talk to her about my past. She still doesn't have any idea of what I went through and I'm not convinced that I'll ever have the chance to explain anything to her.
I would love to be able to tell my story, but I haven't been able to figure out exactly how to get all that written out in a way others will understand. Try watching "The Glass Castle" with Woody Harrelson, which is the only movie that I have seen, that comes even close to what my childhood was like.
Most people don't believe me anyway, but my brother was there, so he can verify that those things actually happened.
It's hard losing contact with your daughter. If the reason you've both split is because of family history that you had no control over, then it would be a shame for you not to be able to reconcile your differences.
I haven't seen the film you quote in your response. I know Wood Harrelson is a good actor, I'll have to look out for the film. From what you say, it sounds as though many people will probably resonate. It sounds like you have an ally in your brother.
Family history is the reason many families split and stay split. I hope you get to work things out.
