Choosing Growth Over Victimhood

I found myself in a place where I could have continued to live as a victim of my trauma, of my experiences. The pain and weight of those experiences were heavy, but I never let those define me. I had a choice – I could stay in that space, or use it as a stepping stone to something with purpose.

How I Felt Growing Up in Silence

Growing up, I was powerless, and silent. Carrying the identity of a victim explained my pain. Yet, underneath the heaviness, I was defiant: transforming pain into purpose – I was determined that I didn’t want my story to end there.

The Positive and Negative Sides of Victimhood

Remaining a victim kept me in survival mode – it protected me, but it also kept me from emotionally growing. Once I'd got my cerebral palsy diagnosis, choosing to shift my focus, to “pay it forward,” opened a door. Writing has become a way to transform my pain into purpose.

The positive is that my words now reach others, who may still perhaps be where I was. The difficult part is that it requires constant courage to relive the past in order to help others heal.

Writing Has Given Me Agency and a Voice

While I can't change what happened to me, I could shape what came after. Writing has given me me agency and a voice. By sharing my reflections, I turn personal wounds into shared wisdom, helping others who may need to see that transformation is possible.

I could have stayed silent, continued carrying my experiences as a private burden. But then the cycle of pain wouldn't have ended. By writing, I not only share the pain, but also the survival, the courage, and the hope that comes with healing – and the belief that tomorrow is another day.

Writing as a Tool for Healing

In the meantime, I shall continue to write – to process and reframe my trauma, and to share my stories of survival. By healing through writing, I hope others can also see a path towards transformation, courage, and hope in their own personal journey of healing.
