Culture has a tendency to impact on our resilience. We’re born into a world where culture is important, but not everyone is accepting of their culture, like our parents or grandparents were.

The culturally diverse society we live in makes it all much harder, because others will form opinions on our beliefs, and that will begin to have an impact on how we choose to live our lives. Not everyone will agree with our choices.

How do we build resilience?

  • Change your resolve so that you interpret and respond to events positively;
  • Continue to work on your emotional health. Learn to build on your strengths, how you see yourself. These are all great tools to help you build resilience;
  • Learn to accept the things you cannot change. The things you can change, comes with new experiences, and with new experiences you learn new things, so you expand your mind and build resilience;
  • Resilience cuts problems down to size and keep things in perspective. Always try to look at a problem and situation objectively.

Continue to identify and incorporate your own strategies for building resilience. Always remain optimistic and upbeat about situations and remember to let go of any issues you have no control over.

  1. Great post.

    I agree with all of it. Also good suggestions on becoming more resilient. I think my daughter would benefit from these.

    I think I will have her read them, especially the one on cutting things down to size because she makes such a big deal out of everything!

  2. Resilience can be a very rare commodity, but I think I've acquired a bit of it from the way I grew up.

    I just have to build it up even more so that I'll be better able to function in the outside world.

    1. I agree with you Randy. Sometimes our childhood can help us build up our resilience, particularly if we know and are keen to change some of those less than positive situations.
