Around grief, we can go through different phases, to the point where grief begins to get complicated. For those who may be struggling with loss to the point of obsessing, it would be helpful to consider psychological counselling.

Signs grief can be complicated:

  • You feel you are to blame for the loss of a loved one, or you could have prevented their loss in some way;
  • You feel deep sadness and depressed;
  • You continue to focus on the loss;
  • You have disconnected from others and have withdrawn from your life;
  • You're feeling bitter and angry about your loss and you’re taking how you feel out on others;
  • Getting up in the morning and performing simple every-day tasks is difficult;
  • You’re not eating or sleeping very well;
  • You're comfort eating and drinking so that you may feel better.

Grief shouldn’t be confused with depression. Those with complicated grief can experience positive feelings but may also feel waves of other emotions they have difficulty regulating.

Grief when left untreated, can become complicated, which in turn can lead to mental health illness such as clinical depression and anxiety.
