It costs nothing to be kind and considerate and if it can help make someone feel that someone else is thinking of them why wouldn't you want to try?
The fact it might also help our own spiritual development, to me, comes as an additional but secondary benefit.

Everything we do should be based on our spiritual development, but that all depends on where we are mentally.
The more at peace we are the more spiritual we will become. But as you say, whatever your leaning, it costs nothing to be kind and considerate.
